South Africa Emzingo Internship Caroline Muito (SSP)

From my colleague Caroline Muito, after ten days in South Africa:

"Two economies and the obvious misconceptions
A night at Parkhurst with sirens compared to a day in Soweto,
Where did you feel most at home?"

Day 5 Monday 24th

First day at SSP. I’m exhausted. Interesting day, huge challenges ahead. Just realized I don’t know quite exactly what I’m going to do after the MBA.

It’s amazing how if I retrace my steps, everything I’ve done has led me to Johannesburg.

Day 2 Friday 21st

Trying to understand Johannesburg from the distance is a futile exercise. Going out to its streets it’s a complete different business. You have a glimpse of the duality that exists as a reality for the inhabitants of this unique city. There’s modernity, progress, vibrant culture, opportunity and excitement but also terrible poverty, under-developed areas, marginality and inequality. The contrast is appalling.

Day 1 Thursday 20th

Finally we have arrived to OR Tambo airport in RSA. This changed our moods instantly, reality sunk in. Now we are ecstatic! We are in South Africa! Questions arise amongst us, what to expect? How’s it going to be? The few next weeks really are going to fly by.

Drew Bonfiglio, our boss, mentor and friend in South Africa is waiting for us with a huge smile outside the airport!
